This season in the AdmiralBet ABA League, the next opponent has been the primary team loaning Budućnost Voli players.
Spartak Subotica, a newcomer in the regional league, pulled off one of the biggest surprises last November by defeating the favorites at the “M:tel Morača Hall,” thanks to Andrej Žakelj.
This marked Podgorica’s second loss after falling to Red Star at home, leaving a sour taste, but Budućnost went on a lengthy 12-game winning streak that was halted 13 days ago in a matchup against Mega in New Belgrade.
Now, the Montenegrin champions head to Subotica seeking their 21st victory to remain in contention for first place and maintain a viable chance at securing a playoff spot from the top position.
– Spartak is a strong team that performed well in our initial match and rightfully claimed the win. We find ourselves in a better situation now, and there are definitely aspects of our opponents’ game we must be wary of. Spartak boasts two capable players at every position, plays well together, and has ample time for training and preparation, making them even more formidable – said Žakelj.
Spartak is guided by former Budućnost coach Vlade Jovanović, featuring notable players like Danil Nikolić and Nemanja Gordić, alongside Dušan Miletić, Dalibor Ilic, Luka Cerovina, and others.
– Spartak is a squad built for the playoffs and is currently positioned accordingly. Our focus is on improving ourselves; we have the time to refine our strategies and will prepare thoroughly. We need to respond with concentration and energy, which will be crucial – emphasized Andrej Žakelj.
The contest in Dudova Šuma is slated to start at 19 p.m.
– We understand our objectives, and I believe we have advanced since our game against Mega, where we allowed the opponent easy scoring opportunities. I am confident that we have tightened our defense and need to showcase that. What’s essential? Energy and aggression, as well as controlling the rebounds, since Spartak is athletically adept. Offensively, we must operate as a cohesive unit at a high level – stated the “blues” winger Nikola Tanasković.
Spartak recognizes the challenge of defeating one of the league’s elite teams twice.
– I anticipate a very different match than the one we played in Podgorica. Back then, we capitalized on our chances and delivered one of our finest performances of the season. The future is now more driven, with clear ambitions, and we must rise to the occasion, as that’s the only route toward a possible victory – remarked Vlade Jovanović.
