Alarm: Montenegro’s Population Expected to Shrink by Approximately 100,000 in the Next 25 Years
According to projections from the World Population Review, Montenegro is expected to see a decline of about 100 thousand inhabitants over the next 25 years. By the year 2050, the population is anticipated to drop to 533 thousand, marking a significant decrease from the current figure of 638 thousand residents.
Montenegro is currently facing fluctuating population dynamics, alternating between decline and periods of stagnation. Data from the WorldPopulationReview.com indicates that the estimated population stood at 621,000 in 2014, compared to 625,000 three years prior and 620,000 in 2003.
Since the late 1980s, the population of the country has experienced minimal change. The 2023 Census results for Montenegro regrettably highlighted ongoing demographic challenges that the country continues to face.
In the previous census conducted in 2011, such statistics were limited, whereas today they include areas such as Gusinje, Andrijevica, Kolašin, Mojkovac, Savnik, Zabljak, Plužine, Pljevlja, and Cetinje.
The final results from the 2023 census, conducted at the end of the year, revealed that Montenegro has a population of 623,633, representing a 0.6 percent increase compared to the last census conducted in 2011.
According to Monstat, children up to five years comprise 6.9 percent of the population, those aged six to 14 constitute 11.2 percent, and individuals aged 15 to 18 make up 4.6 percent, totaling 22.7 percent of the population.
In terms of municipalities, Plužine has the oldest population with an average age of 47.32 years, while Rožaje has the youngest with an average age of 35.83 years. Among the age groups, preschool-aged children (up to five years) constitute 6.85 percent of the total population.
The age group of elementary school children (ages six to 14) accounts for 11.18 percent, while high school-aged individuals (ages 15 to 18) make up 4.63 percent, as per MONSTAT data. Collectively, those under 14 years of age represent 18.03 percent of the total population.
