The Library Association of Montenegro has voiced strong objections and significant concern regarding the alleged unjust termination of Marija Knežević, “a distinguished librarian whose expertise, professional ethics, and many years of committed service have greatly enhanced the operations of the ‘Stevan Samardžić’ National Library in Pljevlja.”

“This unacceptable decision, made by Director Bojana Đačić, sets a troubling precedent that jeopardizes not only the dignity of my colleague Knežević but also the integrity of the library profession within Montenegro.”

Libraries are more than just repositories for books—they are vital institutions for knowledge, freedom of thought, and the intellectual growth of society. Librarians, as their stewards, ensure the availability of information while actively engaging in the preservation of cultural heritage and the education of citizens. Any attempt to undermine their status strikes at the core values of knowledge and education. The dismissal of Marija Knežević constitutes an arbitrary act that erodes the principles of professionalism and social responsibility. This troubling precedent conveys an alarming message regarding attitudes toward a pivotal profession essential for societal advancement,” the statement from the Library Association of Montenegro, signed by President Jasmina Bajo, asserts.

An employee of the Stevan Samardžić Library in Pljevlja provided this statement to Vijesti.

“We urge the relevant institutions to promptly reassess this decision and halt the ongoing degradation of the library profession. Additionally, we appeal to both the professional community and the general public to support our colleague, as this issue transcends a single job—it represents a struggle to uphold the professional dignity of all those committed to safeguarding and promoting knowledge,” concludes the statement from the Library Association of Montenegro.
