The 88th “Critical Mass” bicycle ride took place in Podgorica last weekend in celebration of the International Day of Active Movement. This event was organized by the NGO Biciklo.me in collaboration with the Institute of Public Health of Montenegro, and it carried the slogan “Move for Health,” as announced by NGO Biciklo.me today.
The organization reported that over 300 participants from various age groups enjoyed a nine-kilometer cycling tour through Podgorica, sending a powerful message about the significance of active movement for health maintenance.
“Cycling offers several advantages for both physical and mental health, with many health professionals worldwide considering it one of the most effective remedies, actively prescribing it to their patients. Therefore, it is crucial for decision-makers in Montenegro to recognize the importance of facilitating an environment where active movement—whether by bicycle or on foot—is a simple and logical choice for citizens,” stated Stefan Bulatović from Biciklo.me.
Dr. Vilnerina Ramčilović, a specialist in social medicine and director of the Center for Health Promotion at the Institute of Public Health, emphasized that cycling, whether for leisure or transport, is an excellent method for maintaining fitness and staying active.
“Regular physical activity is a fundamental aspect of a healthy lifestyle, with a recommendation for all age groups to engage in at least 30 to 45 minutes of moderate physical activity daily. Cycling is a perfect way to reach that goal,” remarked Ramčilović.
Biciklo.me noted that the celebration of International Physical Activity Day on May 10th is aimed at raising awareness of the benefits of regular physical activity in enhancing health.
“Consistent cycling can significantly decrease the risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, it strengthens the immune system, muscles, and bones, enhances movement coordination, and lowers stress levels. Research indicates that obesity is notably less prevalent among individuals who regularly cycle compared to those who lead sedentary lifestyles. Additionally, cycling triggers the release of hormones such as endorphins and serotonin, which positively influence mood and emotional well-being,” stated Biciklo.me.
They also highlighted that, apart from health benefits, cycling in urban areas helps reduce noise and pollution while improving air quality and contributing to a more pleasant living environment.
This ‘critical mass’ event has confirmed that an increasing number of Podgorica citizens are adopting healthier lifestyles. The organizers express hope that such initiatives will further encourage both the public and relevant institutions to actively promote cycling and walking as sustainable and healthy modes of transportation in Montenegro,” concluded Biciklo.me in their statement.
