The Parliamentary Committee on Economy, Finance, and Budget has adopted the findings from the consultative hearing regarding “Prices in Retail Chains,” as announced today by the head of the Social Democrats (SD) parliamentary group and EU representative, Boris Mugoša.

“The primary responsibility now rests with the Government and retail chains to implement the proposed measures aimed at achieving more favorable prices for consumers,” Mugoša stated on the social network Iks.

Mugoša remarked that additional measures are essential to protect citizens’ standards and to outline concrete steps toward systematically addressing the issue of high prices. The Committee on Economy, Finance, and Budget:

– Calls on the Government to consider reducing the value-added tax rate on fruits and vegetables, explore the possibility of lowering this tax on meat products, and conduct an analysis of the rationality of excise policies on other commodities;

– Emphasizes the need to increase support for domestic production by allocating more funds in the State Budget, and to bolster the competitiveness of the Montenegrin economy while continuing to enhance allocations for the Agrobudget;

– Urges the Government, in collaboration with retail chains, to evaluate the possibility of prominently displaying domestic products on store shelves;

– Requests that retail chains, where feasible, create dedicated sales areas for products with regulated prices in larger establishments;

– Asserts the necessity of monitoring price changes by requiring retailers to clearly indicate both current and prior prices from a specified date or timeframe;

– Encourages relevant parties, with assistance from employers’ associations in Montenegro, to discuss the potential for further adjustments to certain items and expenses in order to provide more favorable prices for consumers.
