“Vreme”: Analyzing the Sounds of the Student Protest in Belgrade

The non-governmental organization Earshot is examining whether sonic weapons were deployed by Serbian authorities against protesters. According to “Vreme”, Earshot is the first non-profit organization in the world focused on audio research for human rights and environmental conservation.

Based on audio recordings from March 15th on Kralja Milana Street in Belgrade, Irshot determined that the sonic boom resembled that of a vortex cannon, indicating that the sound originated from at least 700 meters away from the recording site.

On March 16, Serbian activists reached out to this international organization to solicit an investigation into potential use of sound weapons against protesters who were participating in a silent tribute to the victims of the Novi Sad railway station canopy collapse.

Earshot, as noted by “Vreme”, stands as the inaugural non-profit entity conducting audio research directed at promoting human rights and environmental protection.

Irshot has obtained 12 videos capturing instances in which weapons were reportedly used against protesters. Among these, four videos feature sounds that align with the noise generated by the Vortex Ring Gun or Vortex Cannon.

This weapon releases air from its chamber at speeds of 300 kilometers per hour, producing a piercing sound akin to a jet engine, accompanied by vortex rings that can become ionized.

Such weaponry could interfere electromagnetically with devices like hearing aids, as corroborated by witness accounts from the protest.

If the weapon is indeed a vortex gun, the footage was recorded at a minimum distance of 700 meters from the source. At this range, the weapon’s discharge noise dissipates, leaving only the distinct hiss of the pressure wave as it moves toward the crowd, inciting widespread panic.

“Vreme” emphasizes that Irshot aims to further investigate the event and is appealing for individuals with specific sound recordings from March 15th to get in touch with them.
