The Crucial Role of Activism and Critical Voices in Society and Its Institutions

The Minister of Regional Investment Development and Cooperation with NGOs, Ernad Suljević, has condemned the attempts to undermine the credibility of Vanja Ćalović Marković, the executive director of the Network for the Affirmation of the Non-Governmental Sector (MANS).

“I wish to unequivocally denounce this disgraceful act. “Montenegro is a democratic society founded on the rule of law, freedom of expression, and the safeguarding of human dignity. Any efforts to infringe upon these essential values challenge not only the individual targeted but the entire society,” stated Suljević.

A photo shared on the Facebook page of “Narodna Sloga” references the smear campaign against Ćalović Marković carried out by “Informer” in 2014. The Montenegrin version of that tabloid, known for aiding DPS in attacks against critics, was shut down at the end of 2016.

Suljević underscored that all civil society participants, including NGOs and their representatives, must have the freedom to operate without intimidation or fear.

“Activism and critical voices are vital for every society and its institutions, thus deserving respect and protection. The Ministry I lead, along with myself personally, stands firmly with all who contribute to enhancing democratic processes, transparency, and accountability in Montenegro. Such attacks will not dishearten us; instead, they will further reinforce our commitment to a partnership with the civil sector, essential for the nation’s advancement,” remarked Suljević.

He also noted that a strategic objective is for Montenegro to become the 28th member of the European Union by 2028.

“In this endeavor, fostering a robust, free, and influential civil society is crucial. Incidents like this compel us to be even more diligent in strengthening mutual trust and institutional safeguards for those advocating for the public good,” concluded Suljević.
