The European Championship has concluded, and just 20 days later, water polo will return to the spotlight. The World Championship kicks off in Doha on February 5, where Montenegro aims to secure one of the four remaining Olympic spots.
The “Sharks” commenced their World Cup preparations four days ago in Trebinje, competing in a group with the United States, Serbia, and Japan.
“We’ll be in Trebinje all week, focusing on optimal training following the European Championship,” stated coach Vladimir Gojković.
What does that training entail?
“We’re focusing on recovery and restoring our physical condition. Additionally, we’ll work on refining aspects we feel needed improvement during the tournament in Croatia,” Gojković explained.
Following their time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the team will head to Bucharest for training sessions with Romania next week.
“Our schedule allows us to fly to Doha on February 2, leading to our first match at the World Championship just three days later,” said Gojković.
The Montenegrin coach has called up 20 players for the training camp, similar to the previous European Championship roster, with the only change being Vuk Drašković replacing Bogdan Đurđić.
“Everything is progressing mostly as planned. A few players had colds, but now everyone is here, and I’m optimistic about maximizing our preparation time before the championship,” Gojković concluded.
The “Sharks” will begin their World Cup journey on February 5 against the USA, followed by a match against Serbia two days later, and then Japan on the 9th. The top team from the group advances to the quarterfinals, while the second and third place teams compete in playoffs.
Other strong national teams eyeing a visa for Paris include Croatia, Serbia, and Italy, alongside Montenegro.
