We Acquired Various Items, Yet They Remained Unused in Serbia

Today, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić commented on the state’s acquisition of sound devices commonly referred to as “sound cannons,” indicating that while various equipment was purchased, none have been put into use.
“We have acquired various items; all countries possess this tool, yet it has never been utilized in Serbia. A megaphone was on standby for use, but it was not needed during the (peaceful) protest in Belgrade on March 15,” Vučić stated to reporters in Brussels.
Interior Minister Ivica Dačić validated claims from yesterday and today that the Serbian police obtained several such devices (LRAD), but they have not deployed them as sound cannons due to legal restrictions, using them instead solely for informational purposes like megaphones.
According to a report by BIRN today, citing a refugee rights organization, Serbian police allegedly employed a “weapon-like device for producing sound” on refugees in the Sombor suburbs in November 2023.
While in Brussels, Vučić emphasized that he would step down as president if it is proven that security forces utilized these devices during the protest on Saturday.
“If our forces employed a sonic cannon in any capacity—considering all evidence suggests otherwise, as confirmed by European and global experts—if it did occur, I will no longer be president. I do not require any immunity,” he declared.
Discussing Prime Minister Miloš Vučević’s resignation, which led to the collapse of the Serbian Government, he mentioned he awaits communication from the parliamentary majority regarding the formation of a new government or the possibility of new elections.
“I will act accordingly. I will either grant a mandate to someone who has assured me of a parliamentary majority or we will proceed to elections,” Vučić informed Serbian journalists in Brussels.
He dismissed the idea of a transitional government, as sought by some opposition parties, asserting that “there is nothing to be gained from that,” alongside any conversations about seizing institutions.
