The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, emphasized the necessity for Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić to align Serbia’s course clearly with the European Union (EU), highlighting the importance of a robust civil society and independent media in this journey.
Kos shared on X that she had a “constructive meeting” with Vučić in Brussels, which also included Gert Jan Kopman, the head of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enlargement, and Marko Makovec, the Director for the Western Balkans at the European External Action Service (EEAS).
“We explored specific measures regarding Serbia’s EU accession and the implementation of the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans. I reiterated our expectations for Serbia’s decisive orientation towards the EU. I stressed that the enlargement process involves the entire society and cannot succeed without a strong civil society and independent media. This approach is the most effective path forward,” stated Kos.
Vučić commented on the meeting with Kos, Kopman, and Makovec, mentioning discussions about Serbia’s necessary steps to unlock new clusters in EU accession negotiations, without disclosing his objections.
“They inquired whether the next government would maintain a pro-European stance and what our expectations are,” Vučić remarked.
