“Montenegro’s Security Sector in Crisis: No One is Safe Anymore”

The civic organization URA has raised alarms regarding the murder that occurred last night in Cetinje, which resulted in one fatality, just days following an attempted double homicide in the heart of Podgorica. They emphasize that these incidents are marked by numerous shortcomings and unclear circumstances.

The URA stated that these unfortunate events validate their concerns: “No one feels safe in Montenegro anymore, and the state institutions are evidently unable to ensure the basic safety of its citizens.”

“Over the past 15 months, we have witnessed a significant breakdown of the security system. The alarming rise in violent incidents, particularly in the Royal Capital of Cetinje, is causing rightful anxiety among the populace. Citizens live in constant fear, with no sign that the government will implement concrete measures for their protection. The disintegration of the system is further evidenced by the disturbing statistic that 133 police officers were attacked in the first three months of this year, reflecting the security sector’s diminished authority and capacity to tackle organized crime,” the URA expressed.

They are calling for an immediate response from the relevant institutions, demanding clear explanations as well as decisive and effective actions to combat organized crime and to fortify the security apparatus.

“Every lost life represents a failure of the state,” the URA concludes.
