In accordance with European agenda recommendations and after analyzing both local and national markets, the Pljevlja Coal Mine (RUP) has embarked on a job transformation initiative aimed at diversifying business strategies. This was announced by RUP CEO Nemanja Laković during the “ESG Adria” summit held from April 9 to 11 in Tivat, as reported by the company’s press service.

“We were the pioneers in the region in developing a Just Transition Plan through business transformation, which is built on our internal resources and involves the establishment of 12 new businesses,” Laković stated.

He noted that RUP achieved its best production and financial performance last year.

“The measures we have begun to implement include educational and retraining programs for workers, diversifying the Mine’s economy, and investing in infrastructure. We acted swiftly last year when we took over the company, creating a Just Transition Plan that includes the formation of 12 new units within the Coal Mine that we intend to separate from the company and fully integrate them into the market. Each project comes with a comprehensive business plan and feasibility study, along with a financing model,” Laković elaborated.

He added that RUP has prepared documentation for the construction of a small hydroelectric power plant with a capacity of 2.2 megawatts and is currently working on obtaining UT conditions for a 50-megawatt solar power plant.

“We are maintaining active communication with our owner to advance projects in this sector,” Laković remarked.

During the panel discussion on “Just Energy Transition,” he emphasized that achieving a just energy transition is a challenging and strategic matter for both the Coal Mine and its owner, the Electric Power Industry of Montenegro (EPCG), as well as the Government and the European Union (EU), to which Montenegro aspires.

“The unique aspects of our transition must emphasize a market-oriented approach while preserving all existing jobs and creating new employment opportunities. It’s important to state that our goal is to retain our core operations for as long as possible. Meanwhile, we are getting ready to meet the ambitious targets of the NDC and NECP, and our role within national strategies and EU accession goals,” Laković mentioned.

He reiterated that by fostering new business ventures, RUP is actively contributing to the economic and social progress of the local community, which will promote entrepreneurship and facilitate job creation, as the company has numerous untapped resources.

Laković emphasized that the just transition process, while complex and lengthy, should concentrate on the local community, state support, and access to funding for financing the aforementioned initiatives.

The “ESG Adria Summit,” the largest regional gathering, attracted over 700 attendees from various sectors, including government representatives, business leaders, international organizations, and academic institutions, all collaborating to advance sustainable business practices, investment opportunities, innovation, and economic growth.
