Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, the Food Safety Administration, the Specialist Veterinary Laboratory, the Veterinary Chamber of Montenegro, the Agricultural Cluster of Montenegro, and local veterinarians convened to address the potential outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, already reported in the region.

“The attendees concurred on the urgent need for measures to prevent the disease from spreading into Montenegro. There was significant emphasis on enhancing border control, implementing quarantine measures, and possibly instituting a ban on the import of live animals from affected zones. Moreover, educating livestock farmers and the public about the risks of this disease was highlighted, as well as organizing professional lectures and media appearances by veterinarians,” a press release from Boško Miličić, president of the Agricultural Cluster, stated.

Additionally, one of the topics covered was the replacement of current ear tags. The meeting showcased an improved tag model aimed at resolving previously identified issues, such as loss of animal identification and delays in issuing duplicates.

“The quality of ear tags is vital for the efficient functioning of the livestock identification and insemination system. Participants expressed readiness to collaborate through the establishment of a broader infectious disease team and to take all necessary actions to protect domestic animal health and maintain livestock production. Animal health is foundational to food safety and sustainable livestock farming; let us act proactively and responsibly,” Miličić emphasized.
