The Montenegro Water Polo and Swimming Federation (VPSCG) has released a statement regarding the doping test of Aleksa Ukropina, noting that details of the case cannot be disclosed to the public.

The reason for this confidentiality is that the process, up until a determination of responsibility or a verdict, is governed by strict regulations from the International Anti-Doping Agency.

Ukropina, a left-handed water polo player, was tested on January 21, shortly before departing for Trebinje to begin preparations for the World Championship in Doha, and unfortunately tested positive due to an inhalation drug.

VPSCG has confirmed that there has indeed been an anti-doping violation by Ukropina during sampling conducted after the European Championship and prior to the start of their training for the tournament in Qatar.

“Every member of the water polo national team is aware that they can consult responsible and professional personnel at any time, day or night, on whether any medication is permissible, and that the medical team has provided guidance and education on these matters,” stated VPSCG.

The seriousness with which VPSCG approaches these issues is evidenced by the fact that this topic was addressed at a seminar for water polo coaches in December, presented by the National Anti-Doping Commission.

“Our priority now is to assist Aleksa in securing a legal team that can guide us through the evidentiary process. Consequently, VPSCG will refrain from making any further comments on this issue until the procedure is concluded,” the statement concluded.
