Overview of Key Objectives, Metrics, and Challenges in Future Waste Management Systems

Effective and accountable waste management transcends being merely an environmental concern; it is crucial for public health, sustainable progression, adherence to European regulations, and serves as an opportunity for job creation, infrastructure enhancement, and the promotion of a green economy.

This information was provided by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Northern Development during a roundtable discussion held in conjunction with the Public Discussion on the Draft State Waste Management Plan for the years 2025-2029. This plan has been formulated in line with the Law on Waste Management.

“Participants showed significant interest in the details of the plan, and representatives from the Ministry outlined the primary objectives, strategies, and challenges associated with Montenegro’s future waste management framework,” the statement indicated.

The State Waste Management Plan for 2025-2029 is described as a vital strategic document aimed at enhancing Montenegro’s environmental protection system.

The ministry noted that the plan emerged from an “intensive and inclusive drafting process” that engaged relevant institutions, experts, the business sector, and civil society associations.

“During the dialogue, participants had the chance to familiarize themselves with the plan’s objectives, which encompass: minimizing landfill waste; boosting recycling and reuse; establishing waste treatment facilities; and reinforcing control and inspection systems,” the statement elaborated.

The plan acknowledges significant challenges, particularly regarding the management of hazardous waste, specific waste streams, and local infrastructure deficiencies. Hence, it suggests measures targeted not only at system development but also at capacity building, awareness raising, and enhancing cross-sector collaboration.

The Ministry calls on all stakeholders to engage in the effective execution of the plan.

“Through collective efforts, we can realize the vision of Montenegro as a community committed to respecting nature, utilizing resources wisely, and ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations,” the statement concluded.

The interested public is welcome to partake in the discussion until April 10th.
