Religion Should Not and Cannot Have a Place in Educational Institutions

The rapid push for the incorporation of religious education into primary and secondary schools highlights the ongoing clericalization of Montenegrin society. This trend threatens to undermine civil society, which, despite facing significant challenges, continues to endure, stated Malik Kovačević, a representative of the Civic Initiative “21 May”.

“The introduction of religious education in schools appears to cater to religious communities that may not possess sufficient influence (often detrimental) on society, particularly among youth. As knowledge and enlightenment wane, it becomes increasingly difficult for young people to resist regressive and dogmatic teachings that encourage division along religious lines. Generations have strived for centuries to promote scientific education in schools, grounded in empirical evidence and democratic principles. Consequently, religious instruction has no place in educational institutions, though this certainly doesn’t preclude individuals from practicing their own religious beliefs in their personal lives. Schools are not the appropriate setting for such practices,” the statement continues.
