The Police Directorate is undertaking extensive and urgent measures in collaboration with the relevant prosecutor’s office to clarify the threats made against ND “Vijesti” journalist Jelena Jovanović.

Yesterday, Jovanović reported that she received a death threat from a woman who identified herself as Milica Ćuk, connected to an article published on the Vijesti portal.

“In response to this, information regarding the incident was gathered at the Podgorica Security Department from the affected party and another individual. Subsequently, the state prosecutor at the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office in Podgorica was informed, categorizing the act as a threat to security,” the Police Directorate stated.

They also noted that officers from the Crime Prevention Sector – High-Tech Crime Suppression Group are taking steps to identify the owner of the email and the phone number used for the call.

“Given the significant role of journalism as a cornerstone of democratic society and its vital function in public information regarding important events and institutional activities, the Police Directorate vehemently condemns hate speech, threats, and violence against media personnel. The police will take necessary measures within their jurisdiction to ensure a secure environment for the free exploration, reporting, and the professional lives of media workers.”

The Police Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the principles and international standards related to journalism, acting with particular sensitivity to protect journalists whose objective reporting and investigation serve as a check and balance, contributing to the rule of law and the safeguarding of citizens.
