The title remains where it is most commonly found – in the Montenegrin handball city. Lovćen has triumphed again, with the giant from Cetinje becoming the national champion for the 11th time this weekend.

– At the season’s inception, we had clear objectives to secure the double crown – we’ve successfully achieved one of those by retaining the title in Cetinje – said Filip Krivokapić, middle back for Lovćen, in an interview with “Vijesti”.

This season, which is now nearing its end, has been remarkable as the renowned team from Cetinje made a strong return to the European stage.

– The beginning was tough; we competed in a challenging European group. I believe we performed well, especially in Podgorica where few teams find it easy – even two matches could have easily swung in our favor. However, we lacked the experience in such matches and a little luck to pull off a big surprise – shared Krivokapić.

As the season winds down, the Cup final is traditionally set for Independence Day.

– Everyone at the club is pleased with what we have accomplished, but we aim to end the season with a double crown – our focus is on May 20 and the semi-final against Budućnost – emphasized Krivokapić.

This season, Lovćen’s players have shined – will Krivokapić don the red jersey again next season?

– Right now, my focus is solely on the Cup and how Lovćen and I can secure another title – we will see what happens. I’ve had a very successful season, and I need to consider whether to stay or explore new opportunities.

His performances caught the attention of Montenegro’s head coach Vlado Shola, leading to Krivokapić’s selection for the national team during the EHF week in March. He could also make his debut in official matches for the “lions” against Italy in the World Cup play-off on May 9 and 12.

– I am thrilled and eagerly awaiting the reunion – it’s a tremendous honor and pleasure to be back on the selectors’ list. I hope to get my first official minutes in a match – concluded Krivokapić.

A league filled with talent, but lacking funds

Although the domestic championship may lack in quality, it still manages to produce some promising new talents in Montenegrin handball.

“I believe there are many talented players in the league who deserve the right and quality conditions, primarily for training and subsequently for matches,” Krivokapić stated.

He also noted that every club in Montenegro has the potential and obligation to improve.

“The main challenge lies in finances, with a shortage of sponsors and investors in handball. If we could address that issue, the quality of the league and matches would surely improve,” asserted Lovćen’s defender.
