The "lions" embark on their journey to the third World Cup from Konversano, a historic city across the Adriatic, which has become a pivotal hub for Italian handball in the new millennium...

Montenegro will face Italy in the opening playoff match for the World Cup set to take place in Croatia, Norway, and Denmark. The showdown at the San Giacomo hall is scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) at 20:00.

"We're aiming for victory and embrace our status as favorites. I believe we've demonstrated our capability to compete at significant events. We will do everything in our power to maintain this in the future," stated our right back Branko Vujović from Pula.

Montenegro could significantly improve its prospects for the World Cup right here in southern Italy.

"We must approach this with complete focus and concentration; however, this is merely the initial stage," noted the German Hannover handball player.

Italy's Advantages - The Crowd, Defense, and Goalkeeper Ebner

The "Azuri" secured their place in the matches against Montenegro through their March encounters with Belgium...

"Italy excels at home when buoyed by their fans. They intensify their defensive play and count on their goalkeeper (Domenico Ebner, currently with Leipzig), whom I played alongside last year. I believe that if we maintain the right mindset, we won't face any issues," Vujović emphasized.

Montenegro's debut in the World Cup came as an underdog against the Swedish giants in 2012, and a decade later, it emerged as the favorite against Greece—successfully affirming that role with a hard-fought win in Athens to qualify for the global competition for the second time.

And now, they find themselves as favorites once again...

"This role brings greater challenges; there's increased pressure. Everyone expects us to qualify for the World Cup. We've reached a point where other teams regard us as a formidable opponent, which means the less successful teams must concentrate even more. We continue to improve every year and I hope that trend continues," Vujović expressed.

Kaluđerović: The Key Lies in "Morača"

Vasilije Kaluđerović, the left back for Montenegro, highlighted the parallels between the "lions" and the "Azure."

"We are preparing for a formidable team that gives their all in every match—much like us. Previous players from Montenegro who possessed that fighting spirit triumphed over significant teams, so we must not underestimate Italy," Kaluđerović cautioned.

Kaludjerovicphoto: Luka Zeković

What would the strategy be for the first match?

"We need to remain focused and cautious, giving our best, so we can rest and prepare for the equally crucial second match afterward."

Kaluđerović believes that the rematch in "Morača" will be decisive...

"I think that their style will become clearer in this game, helping us understand our opponent better. However, it’s important to note that nothing will be finalized if we win away—victory is certainly our aim, but Sunday will be pivotal. We will take it one step at a time."

Montenegro is aiming for its tenth major competition since regaining independence, while Italy has not participated since 1998. All signs indicate that only the "lions" could complicate their path to the World Cup through any form of complacency.

"We are all feeling the anticipation; I believe we have matured enough to avoid past mistakes—we’ve developed into a team. This is a new, rejuvenated squad, supported by experienced players who guide and assist us," Kaluđerović concluded.
