“Extensive Search for Balijagić: Caves and Pits Don’t Aid Drones, Detailed Physical Examination Needed”
The manhunt for double murder suspect Alija Balijagić continues, following the alleged killings of Jovana and Milenko Majgalj on October 25 in the village of Sokolac at White Polje. He was last seen in the village of Knusta Pljevilja, having previously moved through border villages near Serbia.
It is believed that this dangerous fugitive knows the terrain well, having hidden in the area for about twenty years, previously eluding police during a robbery investigation. Mile Vukovic, an experienced mountaineer and speleologist from Bijelo Polje, explains that the terrain Balijagić is navigating is extremely difficult.
– This area is filled with numerous caves and pits where Balijagić could easily find refuge during his escape. The region has plenty of water sources and several canyons. Given his survival skills and familiarity with the natural environment, it is not surprising that he remains at large, says Rin Vukovic.
The seasoned mountaineer and speleologist notes that modern tracking equipment is of limited use in such rugged terrain.
– Thermal imaging technology alone is insufficient for locating all the natural hiding spots. The only effective approach would be a thorough physical search of the area, including every cave and pit, Vukovic explains.
In addition to local authorities in Montenegro, Serbian border police and gendarmerie are also involved in the search for Balijagić. Schools in nearby villages remain on heightened alert as the manhunt continues.
