EU Grants Montenegro Six Million Euros for Military Equipment Support

Kaja Kalas, the European Union’s High Representative and Vice-President of the European Commission, announced today the launch of a military assistance package for Montenegro worth six million euros through the European Peace Facility. This underscores the EU’s dedication to enhancing the nation’s defense capabilities.

During her visit to the Podgorica Military Airport, Kalas met with Defense Minister Dragan Krapović and witnessed a demonstration of various equipment utilized by the Montenegrin Army for search and rescue, mountaineering, and protection against atomic, biological, and chemical threats (ABHO).

According to the European House, the military equipment funded by the EU will bolster the operational readiness of the Montenegrin Army, enhance its capacity to respond to security threats, and support its participation in EU missions and operations.

The assistance package, approved by the EU Council on February 28, 2025, comprises equipment designed for extreme cold conditions, alongside supplies and training for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear operations, as well as helicopter search and rescue equipment.

Kalas reiterated the EU’s unwavering support for Montenegro’s aspirations toward membership, emphasizing that “This assistance is far more than a mere symbol of solidarity; it serves as a strategic enhancement to Montenegro’s security and resilience. As Montenegro progresses on its EU journey, we are reinforcing our collective commitment to peace and stability in the region.”

Defense Minister Krapović highlighted that this donation will significantly enhance Montenegro’s national defense and military capabilities, particularly in the domains of ABHO, search and rescue, and equipment suitable for extreme weather conditions, aligning with the NATO Capability Goals.

This military assistance package forms part of the EU’s broader initiative for security and resilience in the Balkans, which also includes a regional effort to support military medical capacity development involving Montenegro.
