Cetinje Aims for the Double Crown in the City of Handball

The title remains where it has most frequently been – in the Montenegrin city of handball. Lovćen emerges victorious once again, as the giant from Cetinje clinched the national championship for the 11th time over the weekend.

– At the start of the season, we set clear objectives, one of which was to secure the double crown – we successfully achieved one of those goals by retaining our title in Cetinje – stated Filip Krivokapić, the middle back for Lovćen, in an interview with “Vijesti.”

This season, which is gradually winding down, has been remarkable, especially since the great team from Cetinje returned to the European stage in style.

– It was tough at the start; we were in a challenging group in Europe. I believe we performed decently, particularly in Podgorica, where it was tough for anyone – we could have easily won two games. However, we lacked the experience in these types of matches and a bit of luck to create a significant upset – Krivokapić shared his thoughts.

Looking ahead, the Cup final remains, traditionally held on Independence Day.

– Everyone at the club is pleased with what we’ve accomplished thus far, but we aim to conclude the season with a double crown – our focus is set on May 20 for the semi-final against Budućnost – Krivokapić emphasized.

The Lovćen handball players shone brightly this season – will he don the red jersey for the next season as well?

– Right now, my focus is solely on the Cup and how Lovćen and I can clinch another trophy – we’ll see what happens. I’ve had a very successful season, and I’ll consider whether to stay or to move on.

His impressive performances have caught the attention of Montenegro’s head coach Vlado Shola, leading to Krivokapić joining the national team during the EHF week in March. He could potentially make his official debut for the “lions” in the World Cup play-off against Italy on May 9 and 12.

– I’m thrilled and eagerly await the reunion – it’s a tremendous honor and pleasure to be back on the selector’s list. I hope to get my first minutes in an official match – concluded Krivokapić.

A league with abundant talent, yet financial issues persist

While the domestic championship may lack quality, new talents continue to emerge from the Montenegrin league.

“I believe there are numerous talented players in the league who deserve better, high-quality training and match facilities,” Krivokapić firmly stated.

He also mentioned that every club in Montenegro has the potential and obligation to improve.

“The primary issue is financial – the scarcity of sponsors and individuals willing to invest in handball. If we can address this, the quality of the league and matches would certainly improve,” asserted Lovćen’s defender.
