Montenegro Imposes Over 700,000 Euros in Fines

Tax inspectors in Montenegro have collected over 700,000 euros in fines from May 1 to August 4, according to the tax administration (PU).

During the summer tourism season, the Sector for Operations in the Summer Tourist Season has intensified its efforts to monitor the compliance of taxpayers, particularly in the catering, trade, and mining sectors.

“Between May 1 and August 4, tax inspectors conducted 2,320 checks on taxpayers’ business compliance, uncovering irregularities in 322 cases,” the statement reported.

As a result, 437 misdemeanor orders were issued, totaling 1.46 million euros.

The total collected from these fines amounts to 852,790 euros, of which 700,090 euros has been charged, representing 82 percent.

“The collection of fines is related to taxpayers who accepted responsibility for the misdemeanors and paid the penalties within eight days, totaling 249 individuals,” the PU clarified.

During the reporting period, 17 taxpayers faced temporary prohibitions on their activities.

The identified irregularities include failure to report the turnover of goods and services as required by law, underreporting cash transactions exceeding cash register limits, employee discrepancies, and operating without proper tax registration.

According to its representatives, the administration continuously monitors taxpayer compliance by conducting thorough bookkeeping audits and reviewing specific business segments.

“For all instances of irregular business practices, tax inspectors impose the applicable punitive measures, from criminal misdemeanor orders to temporary activity bans and the closure of establishments,” the statement concluded.
