Dilan Prašović vs. La Cruz: A Showdown
Montenegrin professional boxer Dilan Prašović is set to face off against Cuban boxing icon Julio Cesar La Cruz on the night between Friday and Saturday in Cuba, in an elimination match for the WBA world title.
This historic bout will take place in Varadero and will be contested in the bridger category, which includes fighters weighing up to 101.6 kilograms. It marks the first professional boxing match held in Cuba in 64 years.
La Cruz is regarded as one of the greatest Cuban boxers of all time, alongside legends like Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon.
A two-time Olympic champion (2016, 2020), La Cruz has also claimed five world championship titles (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021) and four Pan American Games championships (2011, 2015, 2019, 2023).
His impressive amateur record features 385 wins and just 15 losses. Following the ban on professional sports in Cuba, La Cruz has recently transitioned to the professional arena, where he is achieving remarkable success.
For Prašović, the fight against Julio Cesar La Cruz represents more than just a typical sporting endeavor; it is an opportunity to become a part of history alongside the legendary Teofilo Stevenson and Felix Savon.
“This is my chance to be part of something monumental. This match symbolizes the resurgence of professional boxing in Cuba after over six decades, which is incredibly significant for me as a boxer from a small but sport-loving country,” Prašović stated at a press conference.
He acknowledged that this fight marks the biggest challenge of his career.
“I accepted this match because I have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. This fight could genuinely change my life overnight. I understand the caliber and strength of my opponent, but I am prepared and motivated to showcase my skills on this grand stage. Despite our 24-hour journey to Cuba, I feel great, I’ve managed to make weight at 101 kilograms, and I am ready to give my all in the ring,” added Prašović.
His opponent, Julio, expressed his excitement about being part of this pivotal event for his country and its sporting arena.
“This event marks a new chapter, enabling local boxers to compete professionally in their homeland and allowing our fans to experience top-level boxing matches live,” La Cruz noted.
He acknowledged the challenge posed by Prašović, describing him as a formidable and dangerous opponent.
“I will not underestimate him; instead, I plan to implement my fighting style. I believe I can impress the audience and in doing so, leave a mark on the history of Cuban boxing,” La Cruz declared.
The boxing event in Cuba is scheduled to commence on Friday at 8 p.m. local time, which will be two hours after midnight by our time zone.
Prior to the main event, there will be five preliminary bouts featuring several prominent Cuban boxers.
