The fight for freedom is intrinsic to our native poetry, along with the events that unfolded as an extension of the Kosovo Battle, representing the continuation of Miloševo’s legacy, as stated by Metropolitan Joaniki of the Montenegrin coast during discussions at the Podmaene in Budva Monastery.

Yesterday marked the commencement of the Jubilee International Negoding of Poetry in this monastery, where the Metropolitan articulated during a round table discussion that Njegoš’s historical narrative has significant theological implications, reflecting aspirations for the freedom and unity of the Serbian people.

He elaborated that Njegoš perceives history through a biblical lens in relation to the Serbian people’s narrative. He acknowledges the tragedy of his people within a more extensive context; while he laments Serbian misfortunes, he also underscores the inherent optimism for freedom evident from the outset of Gorski’s Vienna, remarked Metropolitan Joaniki.

He emphasized that this struggle transcends a mere civil fight for freedom—it is entrenched in deeper, metaphysical roots, signifying the eternal quest for meaning in life and, by extension, the essence of history.

The Metropolitan remarked that history calls upon this eternal fight for freedom, embodying both poetic and religious significance.

To expand the discussion further, he noted that Njegoš’s works extend beyond just Gorski’s Vienna but also encompass Šćepan Mali and his correspondences, which merit further exploration, according to the Metropolitan.

Njegoš, who perpetually envisioned the freedom and unity of the Serbian people, drew inspiration from the ancient glories of the Nemanjić dynasty, especially honoring Tsar Dušan, along with Milos and Lazar, who are celebrated in his vision.

He longed for a time when the crown of Lazar would shine brightly once again, which was among the many reflections mentioned by Metropolitan Joaniki in his publication on the Metropolis Portal Crnogorsko-primorska.
