Thomas Weitz, the co-chair of the European Union (EU)-Montenegro Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee (SAC), has expressed his support for the recent agreement between the Europe Now Movement (PES) and opposition officials. They have committed to submitting a request for an opinion to the Venice Commission within the next seven days, concerning the protocol for the termination of a judge’s mandate on the Constitutional Court.

According to a statement from Weitz’s public relations team, he is optimistic that this agreement will help settle the issue surrounding the dismissal of the Constitutional Court judge, facilitating the opposition’s return to parliamentary activities:

“This agreement marks a significant step toward restoring parliamentary functionality and enhancing the political climate. The successful mediation highlights Montenegro’s dedication to its European course and reinforces its position as a frontrunner in the EU enlargement process. I eagerly await the Venice Commission’s advisory and continued assistance for Montenegro’s EU accession, which we hope to achieve by the end of this decade,” Weitz stated.

On Saturday, Spajić and opposition leaders formalized the agreement, with the EU Delegation to Montenegro noting that Ambassador Johan Sattler had initiated the meeting where the signing occurred.

Reportedly, the agreement was endorsed by Danijel Živković, head of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), Damir Šehović, a key figure in the European Alliance, and Adrijan Vuksanović, president of the Croatian Civic Initiative.

The EU Delegation confirmed that one representative from both the government and the opposition will collaborate on drafting the request to the Venice Commission, and the finalized request will be submitted by Spajić.

“All parties have agreed to take the necessary actions to fully implement the High Court’s opinion as soon as possible, and no later than 15 days following its reception,” the Delegation’s announcement stated.

It was underscored that until the Venice Commission’s opinion is delivered, the process for electing a judge to the Constitutional Court, initiated by the Constitutional Committee of the Assembly on December 23 of last year, will remain on hold.

Andrija Nikolić, head of the DPS parliamentary group, announced today that they are resuming normal parliamentary operations, as their demands for functionality in parliament as “the true platform for democracy and political discourse” have been acknowledged.
