The parliamentary group of the Europe Now Movement has announced its support for the establishment of a Committee of Inquiry to look into the issue of cigarette smuggling.
They expressed their intention to actively engage in the operations of this committee and to demand accountability from all parties involved in unlawful activities.
“Combating organized crime and corruption, particularly in relation to cigarette smuggling, is a critical priority in the establishment of the rule of law and a European Montenegro. Thus, we consider the creation of this committee a significant step towards uncovering the factors that have contributed to years of illegal tobacco trade, which has inflicted severe damage to the state budget and tarnished the international standing of our country,” the statement read.
During a meeting of parliamentary majority representatives, it was agreed to form an Inquiry Committee to gather data and insights on the actions taken by state bodies and other organizations concerning cigarette smuggling in Montenegro, as announced earlier today by Boris Bogdanović, head of the MPs’ Club and Secretary General of the Democrats.
