Exciting news from the European Handball Federation as it relates to securing a special invitation to the World Cup...

The Handball Association of Montenegro has announced that the EHF has officially indicated that our men's team ranks first on the replacement list based on their performance in the last European Championship, among teams that did not qualify for the World Cup.

The RSCG notes that the EHF detailed this information in a letter sent to the World Handball Federation (IHF), with Montenegro followed on the list by Georgia, Serbia, the Faroe Islands, and Switzerland.

"This news carries significant weight ahead of the IHF's decision on who will receive a special invitation to the global championship, which is expected to be announced either this week or next," stated the RSCG.

The Handball Federation of Montenegro previously mentioned applying for a wildcard and emphasizes that the EHF's confirmation supports the claims made in their letter to the IHF, highlighting their desire to be awarded a special invitation.

"One of the core arguments for the IHF to grant Montenegro a special invitation is that we are the highest-ranked national team from the most recent major event – the EHF Euro 2024 – among those teams that failed to qualify for the World Championship through playoffs," the RSCG continued.

Among European national teams, aside from the three hosts (Croatia, Denmark, and Norway), three teams qualified for the World Cup based on their performance in the EHF Euro 2024 (France, Sweden, and Germany), while Hungary, Slovakia, Portugal, Austria, Iceland, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, the Czech Republic, Poland, and North Macedonia did not qualify.

"The IHF is entitled to grant two special invitations, with one already awarded to the United States of America. Until now, Montenegro has never participated in significant competitions through a special invitation, always having earned that right through competition. Perhaps it’s time for the 'lions' to seize a new opportunity to shine on the international stage for the fourth consecutive year," concluded the RSCG.
