I Support Montenegro’s Accession to the European Union

The Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Littoral, Joanikije, expressed his support for Montenegro’s journey towards European Union membership, particularly highlighting the anticipated enhancements to the rule of law and democratic values.

This statement came during his meeting with Dutch Ambassador Martin Elhersman at the Cetinje Monastery.

“Through an open and productive dialogue, the participants explored various topics related to the church’s role in Montenegro, particularly in light of the country’s EU aspirations and the contemporary challenges facing Montenegrin society. The Metropolitan conveyed to the Ambassador that he does not oppose Montenegro joining the EU, reflecting the sentiment of most Montenegrin citizens, especially given the hope that such a move would bolster the rule of law and democracy in the nation,” as stated by the Metropolitanate of Montenegro and the Littoral.

Additionally, Joanikije pointed out that European civilization encompasses a broader definition than just the European Union, asserting that “our territories and peoples have historically been, are, and will always be integral to the circle of European civilization.”

He also highlighted that both the clergy and the populace have significantly contributed to establishing a state founded on the rule of law through their persistent efforts for justice regarding the church’s standing in Montenegro.

“Ambassador Elhersman remarked during their discussion that the core principle of the European Union is not to serve as a catch-all resolution for every issue, but rather, it acts as a valuable framework for nations to enhance their societies, particularly in relation to the rule of law and democratic systems, as well as economic and other widespread challenges. The Ambassador emphasized that the EU is a project that fosters solutions built on peace and dialogue among diverse ethnic and social groups. He also sought the Metropolitan’s insights on various pressing global and regional matters,” the announcement concluded.
