URA Proposes Formation of Inquiry Committee to MPs to Investigate Cigarette Smuggling

The Parliamentary Group of the Civic Movement URA has put together a proposal to initiate a parliamentary investigation and establish an Inquiry Committee. This committee is tasked with gathering information and facts regarding the actions of state bodies and other entities related to cigarette smuggling in Montenegro.

“The URE parliamentary group has addressed a letter to all heads of parliamentary factions in the Parliament of Montenegro, suggesting a decision to create an Inquiry Committee. This proposal highlights the significance of the issue for Montenegrin society, a topic that has been consistently raised by URE President Dritan Abazović. There is considerable public interest surrounding the statements made by the director of the NGO MANS, Ms. Vanja Ćalović Marković, on this matter,” the party stated.

The communication to the heads of the clubs also notes that the time has come to form the Inquiry Committee in order to yield results promptly that would “finally clarify all the facts” concerning illegal cigarette trafficking in Montenegro.

“The illegal trade in cigarettes, specifically cigarette smuggling, has resulted in damages to the state of Montenegro amounting to several hundred million euros in unpaid duties. This ongoing issue continues to represent one of the most significant threats to the establishment of independent and robust institutions in Montenegro, particularly given suspicions of the prolonged involvement of state entities in unlawful activities. It is in the public’s interest to uncover all the facts and truths regarding the largest illegal enterprise in Montenegro,” states the GP URA group’s proposal for the committee’s formation.

The proposal outlines that the Inquiry Committee will consist of a president, a deputy president, and eight members, with five members each representing the majority and the opposition.

An opposition MP will serve as the chairman of the committee, with a representative from the majority taking the role of deputy.

URA has earnestly called upon all MPs to support this initiative, emphasizing that this matter serves as an excellent opportunity for cooperative efforts among all members of parliament.
