Consideration of Proposed Rule Changes

UEFA has made a ruling regarding Julián Álvarez’s disallowed goal, stating it was in line with the current regulations. However, this incident from the penalty shootout between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid may result in notable changes in how the rules are enforced.

The Spider’s goal, deemed invalid due to him making two contacts with the ball during his attempt, is likely to be remembered historically…

“Atletico Madrid has lodged an appeal with UEFA concerning the disallowance of a goal by Julián Álvarez during the penalty shootout in their Champions League matchup against Real Madrid. Despite the contact being minimal, it did occur as the player touched the ball with one foot before shooting with the other. According to the regulations (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR room alerted the referee and indicated that the goal should be annulled,” UEFA outlined in a statement.

Will there be a revision to this rule and how might it evolve in the future?

“UEFA plans to engage in talks with FIFA and the IFAB to evaluate whether this regulation should be modified to address situations where double contact with the ball is unintentional,” UEFA mentioned in their statement.

Real Madrid triumphed over Atletico in the penalty shootout and will face Arsenal in the Champions League quarterfinals.
