Manfred Weber, the President of the European People’s Party (EPP), expressed that he perceives a strong determination from Montenegro to join the European Union.

“Our ally, the Bosniak Party, plays a significant role in this initiative,” Weber stated during a press conference held in Podgorica.

The EPP has arranged a study visit focused on EU expansion under the theme “EPP Family in the Western Balkans Region”.

This visit to Montenegro is being conducted in collaboration with the Bosniak Party (BS), an associated member of the EPP, showcasing the EPP’s enduring commitment to enlargement as a means of fostering European integration.

“All nations in the region are focused on integration. It’s crucial now to complete the reestablishment of the EU,” Weber remarked.

He emphasized that the rule of law is essential for the proper functioning of a state: “The rule of law is fundamental for societal growth and development, as well as for a thriving economy and business landscape. It is also vital for the future of the youth, and we are committed to collaborating on this.”

“Recognizing the gravity of this historical moment is key; we must understand that the country is under occupation. Protecting our borders is paramount, and this is where we stand and advocate. I am departing this region, but I aim to communicate the interest and dedication you possess to other members,” he added.

Ervin Ibrahimović, the President of the Bosniak Party and Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that Montenegro’s primary foreign policy goal is to become an EU member, which also includes the accession of all Western Balkan states, as this serves as a “catalyst for peace and stability.”

“The EPP confirms that the enlargement policy is vibrant. Over these past two days, we have been at the heart of the EU – with the EPP President’s visit, of which the BS is a member. I take pride in asserting that this visit signifies support for the BS as well. We aim to act as the bridge connecting Montenegro to Brussels and guiding it towards European ideals. Although it may seem ambitious, we are the only party partaking in the EPP. Our mission hasn’t wavered since our inception. From the start, we envisioned Montenegro as a civil society, a NATO member while also aspiring to be part of the EU. The fruitful dialogues we have had indicate that Montenegro is on the forefront of integration. We need to consolidate our efforts on reforms to attain full membership,” Ibrahimović stated.

He noted that, with the support of the NGO sector and independent thinkers, it is crucial to “deliver the goal for Montenegro” – to evolve into a thriving society.

Montenegro’s accession is significant not only for the nation itself but also for other Western Balkan countries and the EU.

“I want to emphasize the importance of the efforts put forth by the Bosniak Party. The BS has played a vital role in securing independence, NATO membership, and continues to contribute significantly towards EU integration and fostering multiethnic harmony, which is essential for Montenegro. Today, the EU was present in Montenegro, and I am pleased that the Bosniak Party hosted such an event. It sends a powerful message that we are prepared for the EU,” Ibrahimović underscored.

When asked by reporters about the EU’s perspective on Montenegro’s EU accession, Weber responded that Montenegro is viewed as a leader in the region, with widespread agreement on this stance.

In response to a journalist’s query regarding the importance of Weber’s visit from the perspective of the Foreign Minister, Ibrahimović mentioned that out of the 27 EU commissioners, 15 are affiliated with the EPP.

“This strong team can pave a clearer pathway towards EU membership for Montenegro,” he asserted.

When asked by a journalist from Radio Free Europe about EU support in light of the US decision to withdraw its backing, Weber articulated the need to reflect on what defines us as Europeans.

“In times of significant change and uncertainty, we must contemplate on our European identity. US officials may claim that Ukraine is to blame for the war; we see this as misleading. In Europe, we stand for equal opportunities and these principles are central to our European values. RFE/RL embodies these values and we must strive to secure resources for it. Such decisions should be oriented towards the long-term,” he stated.
