The installation of Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) devices commenced today for the approach to Tivat Airport. These devices enable pilots to ascertain the direct distance between their aircraft and the ground equipment, as announced by the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Control Authority (SMATSA).

Plans are in place to install a second DME device for the approach to Podgorica Airport next week.

“The prestigious European company Thales is the manufacturer of both devices, and this conventional air navigation system is already a standard feature at the approaches to all major airports across Europe,” the statement noted.

The project is projected to reach completion by March 15th.

“The implementation will be carried out by SMATSA’s aviation engineering personnel, with assistance from representatives of the equipment manufacturer,” the statement added.

Before the commissioning of both devices near Montenegrin airports, a Commissioning Flight Check will be conducted.

“This process will involve using a specialized aircraft to calibrate the radio navigation systems,” SMATSA confirmed.

The installation of the new equipment is set to replace the existing system, which has been in operation since 2010.

The total investment for this project amounts to approximately half a million euros, financed by SMATSA in accordance with its investment and financial plan.
