The name Aleksa Marušić is featured on the specialized site Transfermarkt, showcasing three Montenegrin champion cups alongside a ball awarded to the top scorer of the strongest Macedonian league, reflecting his impressive tally of 17 goals while wearing the Voska Ohrid jersey last season.
The Nikšić striker is optimistic about adding another trophy to his collection by the season’s end, as he is set to wear the shirt of Šerif, the dominant force in the Moldovan league, by summer.
Marušić, donning the number nine, marked his debut yesterday with a goal against Sportul (3:0) under entirely unusual conditions and rules of the Moldovan Super League.
– Šerif was leading at the mid-season point; however, due to their overwhelming success and 20 consecutive titles, the competition was restructured. Now, all league participants start from scratch in the Champions Group after 10 rounds. The only advantage for Šerif is their first-place finish, ensuring they will host seven out of ten games, significantly increasing their chances of retaining the title, as the former Montenegrin youth international shared with “Vijesti”.
Originating from Sutjeska, where he celebrated three championship titles—two under coach Nikola Rakojević and one under Milija Savović—his football journey has taken him through clubs in the national league, Serbia, and Macedonia, ultimately leading to Zweit in Germany, where he joined Magdeburg.
– My time in Germany started exceptionally well. During a friendly match, I scored against Sampdoria, which at that time was managed by Andrea Pirlo. We lost 4:2, but I will always cherish the moment when a global football legend like Pirlo approached me after the match to commend my performance. Unfortunately, an ankle ligament injury occurred, resulting in a three-month hiatus, after which the club decided to accept a loan offer from Sheriff for the rest of the season. This move was to help me regain my rhythm and play as many matches as possible. The German medical team did an outstanding job, and my debut here was promising; I scored in a friendly against Lokomotiv Tashkent during a 2:0 victory. I believe if I remain injury-free, a great period lies ahead for me, shared the 25-year-old footballer.
Šerif offers a different experience compared to all previous clubs Marušić has been with.
– I have joined a club familiar with what it means to compete in the Champions League. Four years ago, Sheriff triumphed over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu in the European elite. It is an immensely prestigious club, having started the season in our indoor facility before transitioning to the outdoor stadium. Sheriff boasts 14 training pitches, which reportedly outmatches even Chelsea. The Moldovan champions took over my contract, with a buyout option available in summer, and it’s advantageous that the coaching staff at Sheriff previously worked at Hajduk Split under Mislav Karoglan. The squad is diverse, featuring players from all corners of the globe, necessitating the use of English during training. The facilities are outstanding. While Magdeburg has its perks, Šerif provides a guaranteed pathway to European competition. Through them, and by playing at a prominent club, I also see an opportunity for a call-up to the Montenegrin national team, which remains my primary goal, concluded Marušić.
