Turkish FA Lightens Mourinho’s Penalty

The Turkish Football Federation has reduced Fenerbahçe coach Jose Mourinho’s two-match suspension to one and decreased his fine following the club’s successful appeal.

The Portuguese manager missed the Cup match against Gaziantep and will also be absent from the upcoming championship match against Antalyaspor on Sunday.

The fine has been lowered, meaning that instead of $44,000, Mourinho will now only have to pay a little over $15,000.

The F.S. initially handed Mourinho a four-match suspension for comments he made regarding referees after the scoreless draw with Galatasaray in the Turkish league.

The federation clarified that the punishment stemmed from derogatory remarks directed at a Turkish referee and claims of chaos and disorder within Turkish football.

The match was officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić after both teams requested that a foreign referee oversee the game.

Following the derby, Galatasaray accused Mourinho of making racist remarks, while Fenerbahçe contended that the 62-year-old Portuguese coach’s comments were misinterpreted.

Fenerbahçe currently sits second in the Turkish league standings, six points behind leaders Galatasaray.
