The Impact of Idolizing Professional Athletes on Personal Development and Well-Being

The club that has represented Podgorica for seventy years, claimed the title of European champion twice, and has nurtured numerous world-class athletes, is viewed by councilor Mitra Šušić as an inadequate role model for children.

On Friday, the city of Podgorica officially assumed the founding rights of the Buducnost Bemax Women’s Handball Club. During the discussion, Šušić, who leads the club of councilors for the New Serbian Democracy, made it clear that he would not support this decision.

“Investing public money into a detrimental social activity like professional sports yields no positive outcomes,” Šušić stated, being the sole councilor to oppose the decision.

He further asserted that professional sports today fail to endorse any meaningful values.

“We see no promotion of health, fair play, or the concept of a sound mind in a sound body. Instead, these environments breed money laundering, corruption, and can even resemble forms of human trafficking, essentially endorsing everything that contradicts human values,” Šušić added.

From a social benefit perspective, he expressed his inability to support the decision.

“I firmly believe that these funds and investments could be better utilized for promoting health and healthy lifestyles rather than supporting a struggling professional club that prioritizes its sponsors, contracts, and financial gain over the positive upbringing of our children and their development into healthy individuals.”

In conclusion, he remarked…

“Those who idolize professional athletes are unlikely to grow into well-rounded individuals.”
