The Czech Republic is in favor of expanding the European Union (EU), according to Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky. He emphasized that the enlargement process should be grounded in meeting specific criteria and individual merits.

Today in Podgorica, Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Filip Ivanović, held a meeting with Lipavsky.

According to a statement from Ivanovic’s office, the meeting served as an opportunity to reaffirm the strong bilateral relations and to demonstrate the commitment to enhancing cooperation between the two nations.

Ivanovic expressed gratitude towards the Czech Republic for its unwavering support of Montenegro’s European integration efforts, underscoring that EU membership is Montenegro’s primary strategic objective.

He stressed the importance of keeping enlargement at the forefront of EU policy and noted that global events should not distract from the integration process.

“Montenegro is committed to meeting all reform requirements and maintaining its status as a leader in this process. We aim to join the EU without shortcuts, solely through the merit of our reform progress,” emphasized Ivanović.

Lipavsky, as reported, reiterated the Czech Republic’s strong backing for EU enlargement, highlighting that the process must remain contingent upon fulfilling criteria and individual accomplishments.

The discussion also focused on economic matters, with Lipavsky pointing out considerable opportunities for enhancing cooperation, particularly in the defense sector, tourism, and investments.

“One of the topics addressed was the potential for establishing a Montenegrin diplomatic mission in Prague, which could further strengthen bilateral relations and facilitate future collaboration,” the statement noted.

The speakers also tackled security challenges and recent global developments, reaffirming their commitment to NATO and stressing the significance of bolstering European security.

The statement indicated that Ivanovic highlighted the importance of diplomatic efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine and emphasized that maintaining unity within the EU and engaging proactively with strategic partners is essential for stability in Europe.

“It was concluded that Montenegro and the Czech Republic will sustain intensive cooperation across all areas of mutual interest, including economic ties, tourism, education, and defense, ensuring that the Czech Republic remains a steadfast partner for Montenegro on its path to Europe,” the statement concluded.
