NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated today in Pristina that both Kosovo and Serbia must engage in “suitable compromises” during the EU-led dialogue, emphasizing the necessity to concentrate on long-term advantages.
“NATO will steadfastly support the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, facilitated by the EU. This approach is vital to addressing unresolved issues, securing a stable future, and protecting all communities. For the dialogue to advance, both parties must demonstrate flexibility, make necessary compromises, and concentrate on long-term benefits,” Rutte mentioned at a joint press conference with Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani.
Rutte expressed his understanding that these decisions may be challenging but stressed the importance of seeing the broader perspective.
“Normalization is a pathway to enhanced stability, increased investment opportunities, and ultimately, long-term security for the region, benefiting everyone. This is a message I intend to keep reiterating,” Rutte remarked.
He further affirmed NATO’s unwavering dedication to stability and peace in Kosovo and the broader region.
“Our forces are dedicated to ensuring a secure and orderly environment per the KFOR mandate. A safer region translates into enhanced security across the entire NATO territory,” he elaborated.
Rutte noted that NATO is poised to respond to any security developments.
“In this context, we anticipate deeper cooperation between Kosovo institutions and KFOR. NATO will continue to fulfill its mandate to secure all parties. We collaborate closely with the Kosovo Police, EULEX, and navigate our respective roles,” he added.
The NATO Secretary General also highlighted the importance of prioritizing diplomacy over violence.
Rutte also mentioned that NATO maintains close communication with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
“To be straightforward, peace in the region can only be achieved collectively. A political solution is essential, necessitating leadership from all politicians. Collaboration is key,” Rutte stated, reiterating that NATO’s mandate includes ensuring the efficacy of the Kosovo Security Force in its humanitarian role.
He further acknowledged that due to US President Donald Trump, progress has been achieved in initiating negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Following his press conference with Vjosa Osmani, Rutte engaged in a meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
