Today, the International Olympic Committee announced that boxing will be part of the sports program for the upcoming Olympic Games in Los Angeles, scheduled for 2028.

This decision was made during the 144th Session of the International Olympic Committee, on the second day of their meeting in Costa Navarino, Greece.

The IOC has stated that only competitors from national federations that are members of the newly established organization – World Boxing – are eligible to participate in Los Angeles until the qualification events for the 2028 Olympic Games commence.

Established in April 2023, World Boxing currently comprises 84 members across five continents, including the Boxing Federation of Montenegro.

The announcement from Greece has sparked joy among the members of the Boxing Federation of Montenegro, with coach Nikola Ružić noting that this outcome was anticipated. He remarked, “Boxing is one of the oldest and most appealing Olympic sports.”

“We never doubted for a moment that boxing would remain part of the Olympic program. The primary concern was which governing body would gain recognition from the IOC. Boxing’s status, being one of the oldest and most attractive Olympic disciplines, is not in jeopardy, regardless of global political dynamics,” Ružić elaborated. He continued:

“In terms of the Boxing Federation of Montenegro, we are not sitting idle; we have already commenced preparations for the new Olympic cycle, with our main prospects being Bojana Gojković, Tomislav Đinović, and Petar Liješević. I am confident that by 2028, they will have reached their full potential and, with dedicated effort and support, can qualify for the Games in Los Angeles,” concluded Nikola Ružić, head coach of the Montenegrin boxing team.
