After being eliminated by Paphos in the Conference League, Omonia, coached by our Stevan Jovetić and Novica Eraković, is facing another challenge in the domestic championship. With a 12-point gap from the top of the table, their hopes of winning the title are all but extinguished.
In their recent match against Apollon, which ended in a 1:1 draw, Jovetić’s red card in stoppage time overshadowed the game.
According to reports from Cypriot media, the Montenegrin captain was sent off for grabbing an opposing player by the neck.
“There is no justification for this behavior, especially from a player with his experience… Moreover, the team will be without him for the next two games against Paphos and APOEL,” stated the article from portal “TS”.
For Jovetić, this incident marks only the second red card of his career, with his first one occurring back in 2020 while he was playing for Monaco.
“Coach Janis Anastasiou refrained from publicly criticizing him, despite inquiries during the press conference,” the Cyprus portal noted, referencing Jovetić’s recent frustration when substituted.
Anastasiou provided a brief response.
“I didn’t see what transpired with Jovetić. It’s unfortunate that he was shown a red card; he is a valuable player we need. I will discuss it with him.”
Despite this setback, the Cypriot league still celebrates the brilliance of its top player.
“Omonia supporters are surely pleased to witness a high-caliber player like Jovetić donning the green jersey, even at 35 years of age. The ball is now in his court to maintain the enchanting displays he has provided so far,” concluded the aforementioned portal.
This season, the Montenegrin maestro has featured in 19 matches for the Nicosia side, scoring six goals.
