Kosovo’s President Vjosa Osmani asserted today the importance of Kosovo’s membership in NATO, highlighting that this interest is a strategic necessity for ensuring peace both regionally and on the European continent.

“Our ultimate objective of joining NATO goes beyond our national aspirations; it is a crucial strategic requirement for peace within our region and throughout Europe. We are committed to strengthening our partnership with NATO by transforming our military, the Kosovo Security Force, into a modern, professional, and interoperable entity that serves peace and security globally,” she stated during a joint press briefing with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

She noted that Kosovo has already achieved NATO’s mandate of two percent defense spending.

“Kosovo is on the verge of commencing the production of ammunition and drones. We recognize the obstacles ahead. Belgrade’s intention is to undermine not just Kosovo but the entire continent of Europe. The presence of NATO forces in Kosovo serves not only as a safeguard for our security, but it is now essential for Kosovo to assume its role in the Alliance and contribute as a responsible member,” she added.

Following her meeting with President Osmani, Rutte is currently in talks with Prime Minister Albin Kurti.

During his visit to Kosovo, Rutte, along with ambassadors from NATO countries, will also engage with KFOR Commander Enrique Barduani, Head of the EU Mission in Kosovo Aivo Orava, EULEX Chief Giovanni Pietro Barban, and UNMIK Head Caroline Ziade.

This marks Rutte’s first visit to Kosovo since his appointment as NATO Secretary General and comes after his recent trip to Sarajevo.
