Montenegrin Juniors Defeat Spaniards in Kotor

In a stunning comeback during the final quarter, Montenegro’s junior (U-19) water polo team triumphed over Spain in a friendly match held in Kotor, finishing with a score of 11:10 (4:5, 1:4, 2:1, 4:0).

The young “sharks,” currently gearing up for the European Championship, where Spain will be their opponents in the group stage in Burgas, showcased an impressive performance in the last quarter.

After the first two quarters, the visitors from Spain held a significant four-goal lead, and as the final eight minutes approached, they were ahead 10:7.

However, in the last period, our team displayed exceptional skill, equaling the score at 10:10 with three minutes and ten seconds remaining. Shortly after, Draško Samardžić netted a goal that turned the game around, securing victory for Montenegro as neither team scored again before the match concluded.

Draško Samardžić and Srđan Janović were standout players, each contributing three goals. Danilo Stupar, Strahinja Gojković, Miloš Milinić, Tim Perov, and Meldin Hadžić each added one goal to the tally.

The U-19 European Championship is set to take place in Burgas, Bulgaria, from September 1 to 7.

The team, coached by Miodrag Mirović, was placed among the eight top national teams in the draw and will compete in group A alongside Croatia, Spain, and Hungary.

Group B features Greece, Germany, Serbia, and Italy, while group C includes France, the Netherlands, Turkey, and Malta. In group D, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, and the Czech Republic will compete.

The top two teams from groups A and B will qualify for the quarterfinals.

The third-placed teams from groups A and B will then face the second-placed teams from groups C and D, while the group winners in C and D will compete against the fourth-placed teams from groups A and B for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

In their recent preparatory match, the young “sharks” also performed well, defeating the Netherlands 10:6.
