Zadar Dances to the Melodies of Vladimir Mihailović
Zadar has established itself as the most successful basketball club in Croatia over the years. The team from Dalmatia clinched both the league title and cup victory in 2021 and 2024, and they were crowned national champions in 2023. For the past two seasons, Zadar has been the only Croatian club to make it to the playoffs of the AdmiralBet ABA League.
Following the conclusion of last season, Zadar underwent significant changes. The two-time MVP of the AdmiralBet ABA League, Luka Božić, departed the team, along with Dario Drežnjak and Arijan Lakic, who were key players. This situation necessitated that the club search for suitable reinforcements, and among the players who joined Zadar at the “Krešimir Ćosić” hall is Montenegrin national team member, Vladimir Mihailović.
Mihailović’s arrival in Zadar has proven to be a triumph. After recovering from an injury that sidelined him in the latter part of the previous season, he transferred from Budućnost Voli and has emerged as the top performer for the Croatian champions thus far this season. In the AdmiralBet ABA League, Mihailović averages 16.2 points with an index of 12.8, making him a key contributor to Danijel Jusup‘s playoff-bound team.
– I found my rhythm early and meshed well with the team. After my recovery, I realized I wouldn’t continue my career at Budućnost, and Zadar quickly became the most appealing option on the market. I didn’t hesitate. This club boasts a remarkable tradition and an incredible fanbase, and I received a significant role here. I’m thrilled to be a part of it – Mihailović shared in an interview with “Vijesti”.
Mihailović joined Zadar in mid-September, just five days before the commencement of the AdmiralBet ABA League season.
– I entered the market late, as there were clear indications during the summer, while I was recovering, that I would continue at Budućnost. However, that did not materialize in the end. Zadar was among the first offers, and I decided immediately. I knew I could add quality in the areas the team needed. I’m pleased that everything has fallen into place, and I’m in a role that suits me well – explained Mihailović.
The Montenegrin player last featured for his national team on February 25, competing against Sweden in the Eurobasket qualifiers. Following that, he underwent cervical disc surgery and went through a necessary recovery period.
– Given the seriousness of the injury, I put in a lot of effort during my recovery, and I’m genuinely happy and thankful for my swift and effective return – Mihailović candidly reflected.
As the season progresses, it becomes evident that Mihailović is the shining star for the Croatian champions.
– I have tremendous trust from both the coach and my teammates, which means a lot to me. It also comes with the responsibility to always strive for greatness and contribute to the team at the highest level to validate that trust. Jusup is an excellent coach with immense experience and intuition. His system is unique compared to others, and the team is clear about what it wants at all times, with everyone playing a specific role.
Zadar experienced a rocky start to the new season, with five losses in the first six rounds of the regional competition. However, they rebounded to win six of their next eight matches, securing a place in the playoff zone (7-7). They are set to face Split away in the 15th round of the regional competition tonight (19).
– Our start was challenging, partly due to a tough schedule and partly due to our form. This resulted in a lower position in the standings initially. But, we regained our rhythm and, despite some setbacks—including significant injury issues—we have a lot to be pleased about. In the ABA League, our primary focus is simply to strive for improvement each game and aim for the best possible outcomes. Our highest aspirations lie in the domestic league – stated Mihailović.
Formerly with Budućnost Voli, Mornar, Belgian Ostende, Okapi, German teams Tübingen, Würzburg, and Oldenburg, Polish Anvil, and Belarusian Cmoki Minsk, Mihailović expresses contentment with the conditions in Zadar.
– Zadar is truly a basketball city. The community here has a profound love for the club and the sport. My welcome has been phenomenal – said Vladimir Mihailović.
Eurobasket – the Last Major Competition for a Stellar Generation
Due to an injury, Vladimir Mihailović missed the qualifying tournament for the Olympic Games, but he joined the Montenegrin national team for matches against Bulgaria during the November qualifying “window” for Eurobasket.
Last November, Montenegro triumphed over Bulgaria twice, achieving a score of 3-1, placing them in a strong position for their fifth appearance in the European championships, and the third consecutive one.
Our national team would only forfeit their spot in the continental tournament if they lost to Germany and Sweden in February, resulting in a three-way tie at 3-3, with Montenegro holding the weakest point differential, currently at plus 28.
If Montenegro secures qualification, Eurobasket will likely mark the final major tournament for Mihailović, as well as for Bojan Dubljević, Nikola Ivanović, Nemanja Radović, and Nikola Vučević, who have collectively represented a remarkable generation.
– With two victories against Bulgaria, we are in a very favorable position for qualifying for another European Championship. It’s apparent that this generation of players is nearing the end of their representative careers. I hope that—once our qualification is confirmed—this championship can present another chance for a strong performance to conclude a successful chapter for our national team – concluded Mihailović.
