Italy Expresses Strong Support for Montenegro’s European Aspirations

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović held a meeting today in Podgorica with the Chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Italian Senate, Stefania Craxi.

During their conversation, it was emphasized that Montenegro and Italy share historically strong political and economic ties, which are rooted in a robust NATO alliance. Both parties expressed optimism regarding the substantial potential for expanding collaboration in various areas, such as the economy, investment, tourism, transport, and defence.

Ibrahimović expressed his appreciation for Italy’s ongoing political and expert support for Montenegro’s journey toward EU membership. Reflecting on the progress made in European integration over the past year, he underscored the ongoing and future initiatives Montenegro is pursuing in alignment with the EU reform agenda.

“Considering the aspirations of our citizens, we have established an ambitious yet feasible plan to sustain reform efforts and aim for EU membership by 2028,” stated Ibrahimović. He highlighted the significance of Italy taking on the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of that year. Additionally, he pointed out that EU enlargement is crucial not just for the region, but for the entirety of Europe, especially in light of current geopolitical challenges.

Ms. Craxi reiterated that the enlargement policy is one of Italy’s main foreign policy priorities, praising Montenegro as a leader in the European integration process within the Western Balkans.

“Montenegro has a vital role and a considerable responsibility in the region,” stated Ms. Craxi, highlighting that the Balkans, as a cultural crossroads, can also be vulnerable to destabilizing influences. She concluded that peace, stability, and prosperity in the Western Balkans are of mutual interest.

The officials exchanged perspectives on prevailing regional and global issues, emphasizing the necessity of preserving EU unity and bolstering Europe’s security and global stature.
