“Emerging Leaders in Sustainable Development”

The Society of Young Ecologists Nikšić (DMEN) has successfully conducted the inaugural workshop of the “Green Academy” as part of the initiative named “Youth – Leaders of Sustainable Development.” Attendees included students from the Plužine Educational Center along with the Secondary Economic and Secondary Vocational School in Nikšić. The session was led by Andrijana Radović and Jelena Marojević-Galić, while Luka Minić from DMEN introduced the project, outlining its objectives and planned activities.

Andrijana Radović’s presentation focused on youth activism, the importance of teamwork, volunteerism, and the execution of youth policy.

“During the latter part of her talk, she educated students on the concept of leadership, the traits of a good leader, and how young individuals can initiate projects within their communities to become champions of societal change,” according to the DMEN report.

Jelena Marojević–Galić addressed the sustainable development goals and emphasized their significance, particularly focusing on the concept of “ecological footprint” and our environmental impact.

“The students engaged in calculations of their ecological footprint and discovered methods to lessen it, supporting the narrative of sustainable development that concerns everyone. Their enthusiasm for the topic fueled active participation in discussions, enhancing their understanding in these vital areas, which will serve as an excellent foundation for the upcoming workshops,” the report added.

The objective of the “Youth – Leaders of Sustainable Development” project is to foster greater involvement of young people in shaping public policies, encouraging their active participation, enhancing their grasp of leadership concepts, and raising awareness about sustainability and its practical applications.

“This project encompasses multiple phases, with the first phase comprising workshops labeled ‘Green Academy,’ where students will participate in interactive discussions on sustainability, leadership, and local decision-making engagement, followed by surveys of their peers, video productions as a call to action for sustainable development, and the realization of sustainable initiatives.”
