Young Water Polo Team Triumphs Over Hungary in EP Semi-Finals

Ažurirano: 06.09.2024. 19:10h

The medal is in sight, but there remains one final hurdle – the young water polo players have advanced to the finals of the European Championship.

Our U19 national team triumphed over Hungary in the semifinals held in Burgas, Bulgaria, with a score of 6:5. They managed this despite not scoring at all in the last 10 minutes (specifically, nine minutes and 43 seconds).

The lead they established earlier proved crucial, as Srđan Janović netted a goal in the penultimate minute of the third quarter, extending the lead to 6:3…

Hungary was the first to score, taking a 1:0 lead, but Miodrag Mirović’s team fought back to lead 2:1 and then 3:2, culminating in a 3:0 run that showcased Montenegro’s readiness to take on the finals, against the same team that defeated them soundly (2:13) just four days earlier in the group stage.

Janović and Strahinja Gojković were the only players in the “Shark” cap to score, each contributing three goals, but it was the defense that truly made the difference in the semifinals.

With seven minutes left, Hungary narrowed the gap to 6:5, and in the final minute, they launched an attack with an extra player. However, this time our team effectively avoided a repeat of the earlier rounds, where they faced elimination against the Netherlands and Serbia.

On Saturday (18:15 PM), Montenegro will face Croatia in the finals, who secured their place by defeating Spain – 10:14 PM.
