The supply of gas would significantly enhance the energy security of Montenegro and the broader region, as well as fortifying energy ties with adjacent nations. During a meeting between Minister of Mining, Oil and Gas, Admir Šahmanović, and the Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Montenegro, Kamil Hasivi, it was highlighted that Montenegro has the potential to leverage its strategic location and resource abundance to emerge as a vital player in the regional energy sector.

The two officials convened to explore ways to bolster economic collaboration, acknowledging that diplomatic relations between their countries are currently strong, as stated by the Ministry of Mining, Oil and Gas.

“This meeting paved the way for ongoing collaboration, sharing of experiences, and identification of opportunities, particularly in the realm of gas supply and the development of green energy initiatives and decarbonization,” the ministry’s statement noted.

According to discussions, the Adriatic-Ionian gas pipeline with the capability for hydrogen transport is among the key strategic projects being evaluated at the regional scale.

“Our colleagues from Croatia have already submitted this project to the European Commission, which further underscores the international interest in partnership in energy and sustainable development,” the statement added.

It was expressed that developing gas infrastructure could heighten energy stability and open new markets, providing significant advantages for Montenegro and the region.

“Active negotiations and strategic initiatives can yield long-term benefits and establish Montenegro as a principal partner in the Balkan energy framework,” the ministry stated.

“Moreover, the Minister of Energy from Azerbaijan extended an invitation to Minister Šahmanović for the Eleventh Ministerial Meeting of the Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council and the Third Ministerial Meeting of the Green Energy Advisory Council, scheduled for April 4 in Baku. This event will gather ministers and senior representatives from participating and partner countries of the Southern Gas Corridor, along with general directors and leading energy firms, as well as international financial institutions,” the announcement detailed.
