Ljubiša Strikes Again: A Second Killing

Slavica Mrdak, the widow of the slain Ljubiša Mrdak from Nikšić, expressed that the acquittal of the suspects connected to her husband’s murder and the post office robbery feels like a second death for her husband, along with a tragedy for their family, godparents, friends, and “everyone who has shared at least one moment with Ljubiša.”

“Since the charges were brought forth, the prosecution has assured us that those arrested are indeed the real culprits and that they possess substantial evidence. This was reinforced when the Presiding Judges’ Council confirmed the indictment itself. Their confidence was such that they rejected a plea bargain from one of the accused, who was willing to acknowledge his role in the crime, as the prosecution firmly believed in the evidence they presented. Thus, the ruling has left us even more outraged and has shifted the blame away from the prosecution,” Slavica Mrdak stated in a media release.

She highlighted that they have approached the trial with dignity, holding out hope that justice was within reach. They maintained this composure even during the proceedings yesterday, determined not to cast “a single speck of blame” on their family or the late Ljubiša.

“We are left wondering how our family can seek justice for the innocent blood that has been spilled and how we are to manage our lives in these trying circumstances. This verdict has taken away any foundation for us to pursue legal action against the perpetrators of such a grave crime in Montenegro. The Trial Chamber claimed that the prosecution presented them with a fait accompli. They owe us an explanation regarding the implications of this verdict!? Nonetheless, they have directed us to file a civil lawsuit, but that would yield us no real outcome. This is not only a setback for those who toiled honestly and humanely on this case—of whom we are sincerely appreciative—but also a defeat for all decent citizens in Montenegro, highlighting our inability to attain safety and justice in our country,” Mrdak added.

A group of citizens is set to stage a protest on Thursday against the acquittal of those accused in the murder of Ljubiša Mrdak and the robbery of the Nikšić post office.

The protest will commence at Šaka Petrović Square at 5 PM.
