The Government’s primary focus is on achieving credible NATO membership, attaining accession to the European Union (EU), and enhancing good neighborly relations. Any advancements in these areas contribute significantly to the prosperity and stability of Montenegro and the broader region, stated Minister of Defense, Dragan Krapović.

This remark was made during a meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Montenegro, Michelle Cameron, who visited the Ministry of Defense.

Krapović informed Cameron about the Government’s foreign policy priorities as well as the objectives of the defense sector, as announced by the Ministry of Defense.

“He stressed that credible NATO membership, full EU membership, and the enhancement of good neighborly relations are the key goals of the current Government, and any progress in these areas contributes to the welfare and stability of Montenegro as well as the entire region,” the statement read.

The meeting also addressed the new geopolitical circumstances necessitating increased investments in defense.

Krapović briefed Cameron on the defense budget for the current year, highlighting that the modernization of the Montenegrin Army’s capabilities is a top priority for the Ministry of Defense.

He underscored the significance of collaborating with Canada in modernizing aviation capabilities.

Krapović noted the importance of continuing the joint efforts to strengthen the eastern flank of the Alliance through the deployment of defense force members in the battle group stationed in Latvia.

Cameron remarked that integrated allied action must remain a priority, especially as the system for maintaining peace and security faces numerous escalating challenges.

She expressed her satisfaction with Montenegro’s commitment to upholding democratic values, fostering peace, and actively contributing to the collective security system.

Cameron assured that Canada will continue to support Montenegro’s pro-European endeavors.

“Both parties expressed their readiness to further enhance the quality of relations in the defense sector and to explore new avenues of mutually beneficial cooperation,” the statement concluded.
