Simeone Teases Major Showdowns as Bayer Expresses Confidence in Overcoming Bayern

The revamped Champions League introduced fresh elements to the round of 16, a stage that previously existed under the old competition format.

For the first time in this knockout phase, teams from the same nation will clash. The new regulation provided two exciting matchups during the draw in Nyon yesterday: the Madrid derby between Real and Atletico, facing each other in the knockout phase for the first time (previous encounters were in the Champions League final and a quarter-final), and the German showdown between Bayern and Bayer.

– I will only address one question regarding Real. We are up against a formidable opponent. It’s going to be an exhilarating match, and we are well-prepared, – remarked Atletico coach Diego Simeone in a press conference yesterday.

Real and Atletico have met in finals in 2014 and 2016, with Real emerging victorious in both instances—once in extra time and once via penalties. They faced off again in the 2017 quarter-finals, where Real advanced once more.

As for the Germans…

“We are aware of our capability to defeat Bayern, and I believe Bayern recognizes that too,” stated Simon Rolfs, the sporting director of Bayer Leverkusen.

– Nevertheless, we hold Bayern in high regard as they are an elite team, – he added.

A derby, though not a city derby nor involving teams from the same nation, features Liverpool against Paris Saint-Germain. The “Reds” performed strongly, while the “Saints” barely qualified for the top 24, moving through after playoffs, yet this does not render Arne Slot’s team the clear favorite.

Barcelona fared well in the draw, not only landing Benfica in the round of 16 but also securing a matchup against the winner of the Borussia Dortmund – Lille contest in the potential quarter-finals.

– I anticipate a challenging game. They are performing excellently, and we have witnessed their ability to cause us troubles – expressed Hansi Flick, referring to their recent thrilling clash in the league stage at “La Luz” stadium, which resulted in a 5:4 victory for Barcelona after a dramatic comeback.

Among the two Dutch clubs, Inter face Feyenoord, while Arsenal will take on PSV Eindhoven. The Nerazzurri are in the half of the draw with Bayern and Barcelona, whereas the Gunners are placed with Real Madrid, Liverpool, and PSG.

– It will be tough; they overcame Juventus. We have also competed against them and understand their challenge well. There are no easy foes. We’ll be prepared when the moment arrives – commented Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta.

Former European champions Aston Villa, who last reached the knockout stages in 1983, will meet Club Brugge.

The first legs of this round will take place on May 5th and 6th, with the return legs set for a week later.
